“The Closer”: Stephen Simpson is on a roll and earning the accolades he deserves around the world. It all started at the Sahlen’s Six Hour at Watkins Glen when he went three-wide to Juan Pablo Mntoya and Jordan Taylor with 30 minutes to go and held off the duo to score the team’s first WeatherTech Sports Car Championship victory. Just two weeks later he did it again. This time in the JDC-Miller MotorSports No. 54 Audi, he and teammate, Michael Johnson a paraplegic racer, scored their first victory when Simpson battled Kenton Koch making a dramatic – last lap pass for the victory at Lime Rock Park.
JDC’s Back Yard: Headquarted just five hours from Road America, JDC-Miller MotorSports considers this their home race.
The Big Picture: With just three races remaining, the 2018 IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship is quickly winding down and the points battle is tight. Stephen and Misha sit in 7th position with 175 points, just two points behind the fourth place Penske duo of Juan Pablo Montoya and Dane Cameron.
Circle of Champions: GAINSCO and JDC-Miller MotorSports welcome five special team members this weekend at Road America. Each quarter, GAINSCO employees nominate a peer whom they believe exemplify GAINSCO’s five championship characteristics: passion, critical perspective, creativity, operational excellence and persistence to the end. The winners join the “Circle of Champions” and are rewarded with an insider’s racing experience. This weekend, we welcome champions, Amanda Freeman, Angela Wyman, Clarke White, Matt Poluski and Susan Morrison. Congratulations!
Misha Goikhberg on translating test results to race results at Road America: “The test was fruitful, and we had both cars there, so we got to try more things than usual. I think tire wear will be an important factor, so it might be wise to give up ultimate pace to have the tires in the second half of the stint. As always, in the IMSA Weather Tech SportsCar Championship, you must make good decisions in traffic, qualify up front and not make any mistakes in the pits. I think even though all the manufacturers got a balance of performance break we can still be competitive with our GAINSCO Red Dragon package.”
Stephen Simpson on Road America: “The Road America race weekend is one of my most enjoyable of the year. The track itself is one of my favorites in the country. It has a great mix of corners, the atmosphere over the weekend is fantastic and it is also JDC-Miller MotorSports’ home race, so we will have a lot of friends and family in attendance. Some of the setup work we did during our successful weekend at WGI will transfer over, but we will also be making some changes that we learned during last year’s race. I am excited to get back in the Red Dragon and continue the good momentum I have going, and we will all be working hard to get the GAINSCO Auto Insurance No.99 back in Victory Lane!”
