Red Dragon to Start 11th in Sebring Debut

Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Presented by Advance Auto Parts

2018 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship

No. 99 GAINSCO Auto Insurance®/JDC-Miller MotorSports/ORECA/Gibson

March 16, 2018

The No. 99 Red Dragon™ will start the 66th running of the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring presented by Advance Auto Parts in the 11th position.  The GAINSCO crew had a challenging start to the weekend with an ill-handling ORECA during the practice sessions on Thursday.  Drivers Stephen Simpson, Misha Goikhberg and Chris Miller worked diligently to improve the car with their engineer John Hayes.  They improved with each session and by the time Stephen Simpson took to the track for qualifying, the car handled much better, resulting in the fastest qualifying time by the ORECA’s and the other LMP

After the session, the GAINSCO drivers visited the famed “Green Park” inside the raceway.  Known as the craziest camping in racing, the fans residing in Green Park are unique and die-hard race fans.  They were surprised when Stephen, Misha and Chris turned up with GAINSCO hats and cups to give away.  “Wow…I’ve always heard about it out there, but I’ve never been there.  Those fans are the best and I am glad I was able to meet so many of them.  We gave them quite the surprise today and for sure the Red Dragon has several new followers,” said Stephen Simpson.

GAINSCO Auto Insurance has a regional office in Miami and expects over 200 employee guests for the race on Saturday.

Chris Miller on: “Everyone worked really hard to get to where we are today.  Stephen did a great job to be the fastest LMP2 car.  We didn’t have anything for the DPI cars today, but it is a long race and I a looking for to a strong run tomorrow.  Sometimes its consistency over speed that wins these things and we’ve proven that we know how to be there at the end.”

Misha Goikhberg: “It’s been challenging to develop a car that will run competitively throughout the race. We will have a variety of temperatures from the race start to the race finish, probably a 30-degree fluctuation at least.  We need to make sure we have fast car despite the track and temperature changes.  I think we’ve found that and I am excited to give the GAINSCO employees a good show tomorrow!”
