Record five-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion Jimmie Johnson has been part of GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing since 2008. He has made five career race starts in the No. 99 “Red Dragon,” including joining Alex Gurney, Jon Fogarty and Jimmy Vasser for a second-place finish in the 2008 Rolex 24 At Daytona, Johnson’s debut race with GAINSCO.
He subsequently raced with GAINSCO in the Rolex 24 the following three years in addition to joining Gurney and Fogarty for the 2010 Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen. Although he skipped the 2012 Rolex 24 to spend more time with his family before the busy NASCAR season, Johnson may drive with GAINSCO later in the year if he can fit it into his busy schedule.
Although best known for his half-a-decade of dominance in NASCAR’s top series in the No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet, Johnson is also one of the most diverse drivers in the world, as skilled at sports car road racing as he is driving stock cars. Johnson’s racing career started on a 50cc motorcycle at age five and the current culmination is his record five-consecutive NASCAR Sprint Cup titles from 2006 through 2010.
Johnson now owns 55 NASCAR Cup victories in 363 career races. The record includes the five NASCAR Cup titles, the 2006 Daytona 500 and three Brickyard 400 victories at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He also won his first NASCAR Cup road course race at Infineon Raceway in 2010 and was quick to credit Bob Stallings, Gurney, Fogarty and the GAINSCO team for playing a role in the breakout victory.
Johnson is a presence off the track as well. He and his wife Chandra – who welcomed their first child Genevieve Marie in 2010 – promote the Jimmie Johnson Foundation with a variety of public fundraising activities. He is also one of the most popular sports personalities in the country and was named Associated Press (AP) 2009 Male Athlete of the Year, the first racer to receive the prestigious honor.
