Sports Car Champion Jon Fogarty Wraps First Pirelli World Challenge Season

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Dallas, TX) – October 18, 2016 Two-time Sports Car Champions GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing and their driver, American Jon Fogarty, recently wrapped their first full season of Pirelli World Challenge Competition.  The team returned to racing after a nearly two-year hiatus, joining a new series with a new car for 2016.

While it was a season of car development for the veteran racers, Fogarty started and finished the season near the front.  He debuted the team’s new car, the McLaren 650S GT3, at Circuit of the Americas, the home venue for the Dallas-based team and their sponsor GAINSCO Auto Insurance®. With 700 GAINSCO agents and employees attending that weekend, Fogarty finished on the podium, racing from 13th to third, thrilling his devoted GAINSCO followers. “The inaugural event and podium at COTA was certainly a highlight of the season.  No one activates better than GAINSCO Auto Insurance, so to kick off the season with a podium in front of 700 of my co-workers in Texas, that was awesome,” said Jon Fogarty.

The mid-season focus turned to a development phase for Fogarty and his crew.  Countless hours were spent learning the ins and outs and working to improve the performance of the new “Red Dragon™.”  The team was fast at times but overall, in unfamiliar territory outside of the top-ten on the speed charts, on tracks where they’ve enjoyed so much success in the past…Barber Motorsports Park, Lime Rock and Road America.  Team owner Bob Stallings commented: “The GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing team was well challenged by terrific competition,  a new racing series and a new and different type of racing machine in this inaugural PWC season. The entire team is energized by the progress we made in 2016 and I can’t wait to get started on our 2017 program.”

The final third of the season showed Fogarty and the GAINSCO team gaining speed and competing toward the front beginning at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in July where the Red Dragon™ earned its first of five top-five starts.  Fogarty started and finished fourth at Mid-Ohio and carried that momentum into the final three events, Utah, Sonoma and Laguna Seca, finishing in the top seven in six of seven races. “Our off season will be a busy one, beginning with a complete review of the entire program and the tactics and strategies necessary to achieve our objectives in 2017,” said Stallings.  “We expect to see an increased effort by the returning teams, new programs by Acura and AMG and event more challenges by teams we did not face in 2016.  Our competition will not stand still and neither will we.  Expect the unexpected from the No. 99 GAINSCO Red Dragon.  Stay tuned.”

One of the team’s best performances came at the series finale at Jon’s home track, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, where he qualified fourth and finished sixth: “We’ve definitely made great strides since the mid-way point of the season and that’s a testament to our team and Bob’s commitment to success.  Qualifying up front is essential in the sprint racing format and I am pleased we found the pace to do that.  I’m looking forward to testing this winter and going into 2017 more comfortable with our equipment and a strong package.”
