11 Years Ago: The GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Team made their professional debut at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on May 3, 2005. The Red Dragon was born…Bob Stallings and co-driver Alex Gurney finished their first day fastest in the competitive Daytona Prototype category in the Rolex Sports Car Series. A contender from day one, they finished sixth in their first race, the start of many victories, poles and championships. The story continues this weekend as the GAINSCO team races the McLaren 650S GT3 at the legendary track for the first time.
2016 Starting Stats: Fogarty has qualified in the top five four times this season, all of which have come in the last six races. He has nine top-ten starts.
2016 Race Results: Fogarty his finished in the top-five three times this year with his best result a third place podium finish at COTA. He has 10 top-ten finishes with five of those results in the last six races.
Palo Alto Native: Fogarty grew up just north of the track in Palo Alto. Although he lives in Bend, Oregon now, most of his family still resides in the area, running the family business, Thomas Fogarty Winery and Vineyards near Los Gatos. Thomas Fogarty Winery was recently included in their Global Top-100 Winery of the Year list by Wine & Spirits Magazine. Fogarty is a graduate of UC Davis where he earned his agribusiness degree, and worked as winemaker at the winery while earning his degree.
Sweet Memories: A four-time American Champion, it’s a toss-up for Fogarty when he recalls his most memorable moment at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca: “Our win in 2011 with the Red Dragon was a day I’ll never forget. Alex was usually the guy who took the checkered flag, but the way the strategy fell that day…I was in the car at the finish. To finally get a win in the Red Dragon at Laguna…where it all began for the team and on my home turf…it was amazing. That being said, clinching the 2004 Atlantic Championship at home was incredible.”
Jon Fogarty on Laguna Seca: “It’s always the race I look the most forward to…my home track. I’m looking forward to running the new Red Dragon™ there. The McLaren 650S GT3 should be good, especially through the corkscrew and turns 9, 10 and 11. The Corkscrew is legendary for so many reasons, but I’d say my favorite part of the track is turn nine. It’s a fast left-hander after the Corkscrew. It’s tricky and fast and you’re still losing a lot of elevation there.”
Jon Fogarty on his first PWC season: “It’s been a good year. I’d have to say the last three races have been the high point for me. It’s great to be back in the position where you unload and are able to compete right away. The tricky part of the series is that there is not a lot of track time and even though there are two races, they are short so if you spend the first part of the weekend developing the setup, it’s a pretty big game of catch-up for the races. I think we’ve turned the corner now. Sonoma was a kick in the gut because we had a good start and I think we could have kept the pace to finish second. We wouldn’t have had anything for O’Connell, but we were quick. I really hope to end it on a high note with a great result in front of all of the GAINSCO Auto Insurance® guests and my family at Laguna Seca this weekend.
Bob Stallings, Team Owner, on Laguna Seca and 2017: “We head into the final PWC event of the year with one eye on a chance for a good finish in this race and another on next year’s opportunities. Sonoma was a pretty big disappointment for our team. We had a fast car, had moved into second place and were feeling pretty good when an encounter with the number 9 McLaren cut our right rear tire and ended our race prospects very early on. Parente is a terrific driver and meant no harm. It was just one of those regrettable things that happen in racing.
Laguna Seca has two very steep hills to climb and favors those cars with power. Like most tracks, getting close to the front in qualifying is critical. Getting through turn 2 on the start, without damaging the car, is more than a little bit important too. Jon has raced here often and has had great success for our team. I remembered well how he passed Scott Pruett for the lead and a win on the hill just before the Corkscrew, which figured greatly in one of our Sports Car Championships. It was one of the most memorable drives of our run with Prototypes. Maybe we will see another one of those great runs this weekend.”
Stallings Looks Toward 2017: “The prospects of the 2017 racing season are definitely on my mind as we finish our inaugural run at PWC. We have been contacted by several drivers interested in running in the SprintX Series and I am considering the potential benefits of running in both Sprint and SprintX, as a result. No decision yet, but plenty of interesting options are developing for us.”
In the meantime, a good finish at Laguna Seca would be a very happy ending to the 2016 season and a productive beginning to an off-season of getting ready for a successful 2017 racing season.
