The Red Dragon was FAST again in Utah
Rounds 16 and 17 of the 2016 Pirelli World Challenge
The Pirelli World Challenge Grand Prix Presented by Energy Solutions
Jon Fogarty, No. 99 GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing™ McLaren 650S GT3
August 14, 2016
The Red DragonTM is back! Jon Fogarty and his No. 99 GAINSCO Auto Insurance/Bob Stallings Racing cLaren 650S GT3 proved their recent success in Mid-Ohio was no fluke. The team has completed its due diligence in sorting out the intricacies of the new car, and they are now consistently competitive. This doesn’t mean there won’t be future challenges, but for the second straight event, Jon has had the equipment to race up front and challenge his competitors lap after lap.
Jon took the green flag on Saturday from the fifth position and had a terrific start, passing for fourth immediately. Within seconds, hough, his quick reflexes spared TheRed Dragon a disastrous outcome as he avoided two separate spinning cars one after the other (view here: https://twitter.com/JonFogarty99/status/764623883567640576?s=04). Jon’s expertise saved the day but he was forced off-course to avoid the melee and re-entered the track in 14th position. From there, Jon charged through the field, picking off his competitors, one by one until he took the checkered flag from the 7th position. It was an exciting and eventful race for Jon and The Red Dragon, and team owner Bob Stallings was pleased:“Jon had an incredible run in the race. Going from 14th and back to seventh was a terrific result. He is a fighter with no quit in him.”
While race two was less eventful in terms of crashes and passing, it was a welcomed change for the nerves of the GAINSCO crew. Fogarty’s eighth place starting position was determined from his fastest lap time in the race on Saturday. Once again, he had a great start, displaying The Red Dragon’s potential and his ability, passing two cars for sixth position on the first lap. He battled Michael Cooper in the Cadillac, masterfully defending position through most of the race, but he had his eyes on the fifth and sixth place cars of James Davison and Ryan Eversley respectively. Eventually both Fogarty and Eversley picked off Davison and then Eversley spun off course, handing fifth place to the No. 99. It was another solid performance; The Red Dragon was quick and Jon was flawless. The team now turns its focus to Fogarty’s two home tracks, Sonoma and Laguna Seca, where they expect to continue their challenge for podium finishes.

Jon Fogarty on Race One: “Unfortunately we got caught out with the turn one incident. We were running in fourth and that put us back to the back of the pack. It was fun working our way forward from there, but the day would have been much easier up front! It was difficult, but we had a good McLaren and the GAINSCO team gave me a great car. It’s tough to put in a good lap time when running in the middle of the pack, so that hurts us with the 8th place starting position tomorrow. Hopefully though, we’ll have a good, clean race and have an even better result tomorrow.”
Jon Fogarty on Race Two: “I am pretty pleased with the GAINSCO Auto Insurance/McLaren 650S GT3, it was strong today, and it’s definitely nice to be finishing in the top-five. It was a pretty tough race with Michael Cooper and the Cadillac. I had a clean start and picked up a couple of positions, and then made up one through attrition. I kind of ran there at fifth the rest of the race. We found a good balance in the car. It was the best McLaren we’ve had all year. It was a great result really. It’s a competitive field and obviously we want to win, but with the long straightaway this is a difficult place for the McLarens, so I think we did a good job with what we were given. We’re headed to Sonoma next, which should be a good track for the McLaren chassis, and I am looking forward to it.”
Bob Stallings on the weekend: “It was a really nice weekend. Obviously we wished we had gotten to the podium, but we learned a lot about the car. Jon learned a lot and our engineer, John Ward, really seems to be on top of it. We went from eighth to fifth in a green race and in this series that is pretty good. Without yellows, it is so competitive, it is pretty tough to pass, so great job by Jon.”
