Champions in Utah: The 4.5-mile campus is home to the first championship title for GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing. The team won seven of 14 races that season and clinched the series championship over rivals Chip Ganassi Racing in the final event in Utah.
UTAH Stats: Although GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing has not competed in Utah since 2010, they do have five starts at the desert track. The team has experienced some of their most celebrated moments at the Utah Motorsports Campus, but those victories didn’t come easy. It took the Dallas based team three attempts (9th in 2006, 8th in 2007 and 3rd in 2008) before they finally won in Utah in 2009. They followed up their victory with a second place finish in 2010. Fogarty has started in the top five in four of five events, including a pole in 2009.
Endurance to Sprint: Jon Fogarty may have more laps at the Utah Motorsports Campus than most of the other drivers combined. He’s competed there five times, but each of those five starts were either six or nine-hour endurance races where he co-drove with teammate Alex Gurney. Both of his races combined this weekend in the Pirelli World Challenge (100 minutes) will be less driving time than one stint (average of 120 minutes) of the endurance events he’s raced here in the past.
A Special Addition: The GAINSCO team welcomes an extra team member this weekend, William Fogarty. Ten-year old William is the son of Jon and Sara Fogarty and for the first time, accompanied his dad to work this weekend. Jon and William kicked off their race weekend with an event promotion at the local karting track where they raced against media, fans and other PWC drivers. Jon scored the pole and young William beat his competition!
Bob Stallings, Team Owner: “It’s good to be back at the track in Salt Lake. We recently tested the car at this venue and had a productive outing. Because of the power differentials of the homologated and un-homologated entrants, it’s hard to predict how our McLaren 650S GT3 will fare against the field, but as always, we hope for the best.”
Jon Fogarty: “I can’t help but relive the fierce battles, the excitement and the anxiety I’ve experienced at this track, every time I walk into this place. The season finale in 2007 - it was a wild race…nine hours and the Ganassi boys against us fighting for the championship. It was going to be determined that day one way or another. We’d set so many records and just had an unbelievable season with the Red Dragon…so the possibility of not winning the championship just seemed unfathomable. In the end, we did, but it sure didn’t come easy. We had nine ours of hard racing, some intense exchanges with Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas, a few mistakes, a fast car and some incredible pit stops. By the end, we prevailed, but as a team, I think we were so exhausted from the roller coaster of it all, that it took a few days to sink in that we were the Champions!”
