The GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing team wrapped a double-header at the historic and picturesque Road America Sunday in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. A record crowd of more than 100,000 fans lined the fences six rows or more deep around the four-mile circuit. Jon Fogarty did his best to give them a show on and off the track. Off the track, he spent time visiting fans around the circuit signing autographs and giving away t-shirts. Thrilled with the surprise visit, fans were anxious to take photos and share their favorite stories about Fogarty and The Red Dragon™. He promised his fans a show and gave them one Sunday in race two when rookie and fellow McLaren driver rookie Austin Cindric hit Fogarty and spun him at Canada Corner early in the race. Fogarty recovered but the Red Dragon was damaged, dragging its diffuser and compromising his pace the rest of the race. Fogarty still charged hard and finished 12th despite the damage. Today’s contact was especially disappointing and perhaps even surprising since Cindric nearly ran Fogarty off the course twice in Saturday’s race one. Cindric was not penalized and unfortunately took it a step further with Sunday’s contact…for which he was issued a penalty. Despite the on-track melee, the Red Dragon was not as fierce as it could have been due to setup and balance of power issues. The McLarens were challenged with the long straightaways on the four-mile track. It was a good weekend for development and the team feels well-prepared for their next stop at Mid-Ohio…shorter road course with few straights and more corners, which better suits the McLaren 650S GT3.

Jon Fogarty on the weekend: “Despite our challenges here, it is always great to come to Road America. The fans this weekend were just unbelievable. I’ve never seen this many people here and I am so glad I got the chance to go out and meet a few of them. I was pretty surprised by Cindric yesterday but today was over the top. It’s disappointing, but you have to move on. Overall we were off pace, but continued to learn a lot about the McLaren 650S GT3 this weekend and it was great to host the Circle of Champions from GAINSCO Auto Insurance®. I’m looking forward to Mid-Ohio, I think we have a lot more potential there for better results.”
Bob Stallings on the weekend: “It’s always great to come to Road America because it is such a great race track. This weekend though was something else. It’s obvious the fans really appreciated the IndyCar/PWC ticket because the attendance was incredible. So many fans stopped by to see the Red Dragon and say hello. That’s a really special part of racing and it was so evident this weekend. We knew coming into the weekend we would not have the pace to keep up with the front runners with the mandates, but we were hoping for a better weekend. We made a lot of changes to the car and we learned a lot, but the biggest problem on track for us today was the #6 car driven by Austin Cindric. He seems to have a habit of running into us. I don’t know if he can’t see the red, maybe he is color blind, but he runs into us a lot and he spun us. None of that really mattered as much as the fact that we were slow. We were probably a second off the pace that we needed to be at. We are frustrated, but our enthusiasm is not diminished, we will figure it out. Not a perfect weekend, but Mid-Ohio is next. I won a world championship there in the Atlantic car and the Red Dragon has a winning history there, so we’ll see what happens.”
