Consistency: The No. 99 GAINSCO Auto Insurance Red Dragon™ sits fifth in the 2018 WeatherTech SportsCar Championship after three straight top-eight finishes. The battle is tight, with 71 championship points, Stephen Simpson and Misha Goikhberg sit just eight points out of the top three in the standings.
Mid-Ohio Podiums: Both Misha and Stephen scored podium finishes in their last visits to Mid-Ohio. It’s been five years for Misha; he finished second in the 2013 IMSA Lites race. For Stephen Simpson, it’s been more than a decade. He finished third while racing in Indy Lights at Mid-Ohio in 2007.
Reacquainted: Both Simpson and Goikhberg reacquainted themselves with Mid-Ohio last month while completing a two-day test after Long Beach. The temperatures were chilly, and they woke up to snow during the test. However, the team persevered, waited out the weather, and managed to complete 150 miles of valuable track time. “The temperatures were cold, and we had fresh snow. It would have been easy to pack it in. We chose to wait it out and see. The Ohio weather can be unpredictable. It’s good we did; we managed to learn so much over the course of the test and we knew it could very well be a wet race weekend in May.” said Stephen Simpson.
Misha Goikhberg on his favorite turn at Mid-Ohio: “My favorite part of the track is corner 9. You must float a lot of speed in, and there is always a slide on exit, so you have to be greedy, just not too greedy. Overall, it’s a very flowy track without much time to relax and regain your composure. I think traffic will provide all the action, as there is really only one line in many places here, so passing GT cars will be tough. We had a good test here couple of weeks ago and we are ready to put the GAINSCO Red Dragon into a good position.”
Stephen Simpson on the ORECA at Mid-Ohio: “I am confident we can have a solid weekend. I think our car will be good through the medium and high-speed corners. We had a good test a few weeks ago and overall, I’m just excited the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship is heading back to Mid-Ohio. I’m looking forward to getting the weekend started and getting our GAINSCO Auto Insurance No.99 running up front.”
