10 Years Ago at Laguna Seca: Bob Stallings Racing, then known as Blackhawk Racing made their professional debut at Laguna Seca Raceway competing in the Daytona Prototype category of the Grand Am Sports Car Series. The team was destined to succeed, and drivers Bob Stallings and Alex Gurney topped the charts on their first day, recording the fastest time in practice.
10 Years Later: GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing returns to Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway as two-time Sports Car Champions, yet this weekend feels more like their debut 10 years ago. This will be the team’s second race in the Pirelli World Challenge with the new Red Dragon, a Hyundai Genesis Coupe and it will also be the team’s first time doing a standing start.
Familiar Places, Familiar Faces: A native of Palo Alto, California, 4x champion Jon Fogarty considers Laguna Seca his home track. He’s recorded several milestones at the track, he clinched the 2004 Toyota Atlantic Championship at Laguna Seca and he’s recorded two victories and two podiums at the famed circuit, including a victory with the GAINSCO/Bob Stallings crew in 2011. This will be Fogarty’s first race in the new Red Dragon, he was competing in the World Endurance Challenge at Nurburgring two weeks ago when the team made their Pirelli World Challenge Debut.
The Sea of Red Returns: The No. 99 Hyundai Genesis Coupe’s primary sponsor, GAINSCO Auto Insurance® continues its peerless sponsorship activation program by hosting 50 contest-winning Independent Agent partners at this weekend’s Pirelli World Challenge finale.
Thunderhill Test: The GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing team tested at Thunderhill just north of Sacramento immediately after the Sonoma race two weeks ago. Test driver Jeff Harrison commented, “We accomplished a ton in a relatively short amount of time. We figured out why our Fuel sensor failed at Sonoma, and we were able to work with a MoTech representative and sort out the pit lane speed limiter and a few other details. We didn’t really work on set-up, but we were able to resolve some new car teething pains, so the team is set for Laguna Seca.”
Jon Fogarty on his Pirelli World Challenge Debut: “It’s great to be back with GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing and especially reuniting at my home track, Laguna Seca. It’s been a long time since we’ve all raced together, but I am sure we will pick up right where we left off. From a technical side, we’ll keep our eye on the ball developing this new Hyundai Genesis Coupe, and from a commercial standpoint, the GAINSCO Auto Insurance® crew will be back with their group of agents giving us tons of support, just like it’s always been!”
Bob Stallings: “We are excited to have Jon Fogarty back in the car for GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing. This weekend will be his first time in this car and we are looking forward to his feedback on how the chassis is performing. Power is an issue, but we have some exciting engine prospects for next season coming from Hyundai. In the meantime, there are improvements in the handling we can make by treating this weekend as a unique testing experience…the best kind you can get.”
