Terry WilbertJohn Ward

Chief Engineer

RESIDENCE   Costa Mesa, CA

Chief Engineer for GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing, John Ward joined the team after the 2012 Rolex 24 At Daytona.  Although he has been with GAINSCO for only a few seasons, Ward has more than 40 years of experience as a race and design engineer in both open-wheel Indy Car and sports car racing competition.

Ward has won races in IRL Indy Car, CART Champ Car, IMSA, ALMS and the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series as a race engineer but is equally skilled on the design front.  He began his career designing, building and racing his own cars in the early 1970s and later led numerous design projects.  Among the most notable were All American Racers (AAR) Eagle Indy Cars, including the innovative 1981 “Pepsi Challenger,” and later the highly successful AAR Eagle/Toyota Mk III GTP that was unbeaten in 1993, including victories in the Rolex 24 At Daytona, the 12 Hours of Sebring and IMSA GTP Championships that year and the previous season in 1992.  It was Ward’s ties to AAR and its founder Dan Gurney, father of No. 99 driver Alex Gurney that led him to GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing.

Ward more recently engineered winning sports car efforts for Adrian Fernandez in both the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports and ALMS where the team won the 2009 LMP2 Championship.  He also engineered the winning Falken Racing Porsche GT3 team in ALMS for three years through the 2012 season. Ward was also on Ben Bowlby’s design team for the innovative “Delta Wing” race car that was built at AAR, debuted in 2012 at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and is a Prototype entry in the inaugural IMSA TUDOR United SportsCar Championship season in 2014.

Ward lives in Costa Mesa, California with his wife Jutta and has three grown children, Amanda, Emily and Nathaniel.
