DPi: Since the last round at Road America in early August, JDC-Miller MotorSports announced they will return to the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in 2019 and will field a two-car Cadillac DPi-V.R program starting with the Rolex 24 At Daytona in 2019. The team plans to take delivery of the first Dallara built Cadillac DPi-V.R in September with the goal of beginning initial testing in early November 2018.
Laguna Seca Success: Stephen, Misha and GAINSCO have all enjoyed success individually at Laguna Seca. This weekend, they intend to succeed together. The Red Dragon™ drove to victory lane in 2011 on its seventh attempt. Misha won at Laguna Seca competing in the USF2000 race in 2010 and finished 3rd in IMSA Lites in 2013. Stephen Simpson has a pair of fourth places finishes under his belt. He and Misha finished 4th in their LMP2 debut their last year and he also finished fourth in 2008 in LMP1.
The Big Picture: The Red Dragon’s recent second place finish at Road America sent Stephen Simpson and Misha Goikhberg to the top five in the series championship points standings. This weekend’s America’s Tire 250 is the penultimate race in the 10-race championship, and the Red Dragon has a total of 206 points, three points ahead of the Penske Team of Juan Pablo Montoya and Dane Cameron.
WINNERS: GAINSCO will host 60 guests this weekend from Arizona and Utah. The guests are independent insurance agents who won the trip based on a sales contest.
Double Duty: Stephen Simpson will race twice this weekend. He also competes in the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge with paraplegic racer Michael Johnson for JDC-Miller MotorSports. They’ve had an abbreviated season, making their debut in May at Mid-Ohio after Johnson recovered from injuries during the “Roar Before the 24” test at Daytona in January. Since their debut in May, they’ve finished inside the top four at every race and earned their first victory at Lime Rock Park.
Misha Goikhberg: “We are looking to finish the final stretch of the championship on a strong note and get another win before the end of the year. This is a tough racetrack with little room for passing, and changing conditions due to the amount of sand near the track. I am hopeful that Stephen and I can get a good result for GAINSCO Auto Insurance in the Red Dragon.”
Stephen Simpson on Laguna Seca: “I am excited to get back in our GAINSCO Auto Insurance No. 99 and to be back at Laguna Seca. It is a challenging circuit mainly because of the low grip nature of the track. There are some good setup related changes we learned last year that we will be able to apply for this year. I’m looking forward to having another solid finish and scoring some good points this weekend. We’ll have a large contingency of GAINSCO fans here cheering us on to the end, and that always makes the Red Dragon a little bit faster.”
